{"id":860,"date":"2024-12-11T12:29:54","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T16:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abantuvillage.com\/m\/?p=860"},"modified":"2024-12-16T20:39:10","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T00:39:10","slug":"winterizing_our_beehives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abantuvillage.com\/m\/winterizing_our_beehives\/","title":{"rendered":"Winterizing Our Beehives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>When my temperatures were consistently between 13 Celsius \/55.4 Fahrenheit to 10C\/50F I decided to insulate my beehives using bee cozies.<\/p>\n<p>I winterize my <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49uwgnp\">beehives<\/a> for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<p><\/p><ul><li>To stop high wind gusts blowing into the hives<\/li><li>&nbsp;I use black plastic <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4ix9Tl7\">bee cozies<\/a> to increase solar gain that will help my honeybees maintain the correct temperature for brooding. Honeybees require their brood nest to be kept at 33C\/ 91.4F<\/li><li>I seal and insulate the feeder shims to prevent any condensation freezing to the bottom of the feeder shim and later dripping down as cold water droplets into the bee cluster<\/li><\/ul>\n<p>Not all beekeepers winterize their hives. It all depends on your local weather.<\/p>\n<p>I garden in Nova Scotia\/Mi\u2019kma\u2019ki, Canada. Gardening Zone 6b\/ USA Zone 5b. In my local area, our winter temperatures on average, don\u2019t get below -5C \/ 23F. In the winter months, we get high winds that average about 24 kilometres per hour\/ 15 miles per hour in January.
