{"id":893,"date":"2024-12-11T13:58:01","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T17:58:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abantuvillage.com\/m\/?p=893"},"modified":"2024-12-16T20:40:12","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T00:40:12","slug":"winter-beehive-setup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abantuvillage.com\/m\/winter-beehive-setup\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Beehive Setup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I have listed below,&nbsp; how I have my backyard <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/41ov1Ed\">beehives<\/a> set up for the winter.<\/p><p><strong><br><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Hive Stand &amp; Base<\/strong><\/p><p>This provides support and is the base for the hive<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bottom Vent in closed position.<\/strong><\/p><p>The vent was set up in the closed position to reduce cold air going up the hive&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solid Bottom Board&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><p>This was added to also minimize cold wind gusts blowing into the hive<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entrance Reducer&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><p>In the winter, the Entrance Reducer plays an important role. It physically blocking pets like mice and shrew from entering into the hives<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brood Box<\/strong><\/p><p>This is the main structure that houses the frames where the bees raise their young and store pollen, nectar and some honey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medium Super<\/strong><\/p><p>This is a secondary structure slightly smaller than the Brood Box. I built this version from a Flow<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Hive Brood Box.<\/strong><\/p><p>The bees store additional nectar and honey that I don\u2019t harvest. The bees feed on this when they have finished supplies in the Brood Box<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Dcifi7\">Insulated Top Feeder Shim<\/a> &amp; Cover<\/strong><\/p><p>This provides an easy way to provide emergency food supplies to bees if they run out of honey and nectar during long winters.<\/p><p>I sealed and insulated the feeder shims to prevent any condensation freezing to the bottom of the feeder shim and later dripping down as cold water droplets into the bee cluster<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4gxf5nx\">Insulated<\/a> Roof<\/strong><\/p><p>This protects the bees from direct exposure to the elements.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4ix9Tl7\">Bee Cozy<\/a><\/strong><\/p><p>I used black plastic bee cozies to increase solar gain that will help the honeybees maintain the correct temperature for brooding. Honeybees require their brood nest to be kept at 33C\/ 91.4F<\/p><p>Weight &amp; Anchored Strap<\/p><p>The concrete blocks and ratchet straps ensure that the hives are not blown off during extreme winter weather events<\/p><p><br><\/p><p>They are so many different ways to winterize beehives.
